LeTOURNEAU BOX SCORE
EAST TEXAS BAPTIST BOX SCORE
Farmers Branch, Texas –
Teylor Schiefelbein went 1-for-3 with a double, scored a run and earned the victory in the circle to lead the Concordia University Texas softball team to a 2-1 win over 22nd-ranked East Texas Baptist on Friday, March 2 at the American Southwest Conference First Pitch Tournament being held at Oran Good Park. The Tornados also dropped a 5-2 decision to LeTourneau earlier in the day.
Concordia scored once in the first and second innings to give Schiefelbein enough insurance against East Texas Baptist (3-3), which captured the 2010 NCAA National Championship before winning the 2011 ASC Tournament crown. Schiefelbein helped herself out by blasting a one-out double to center before scoring on a wild pitch in the first, while a fielding error by the Tiger first baseman allowed
Erin Duhon to come home and double the Tornado lead one frame later. Kayla Garcia sliced the lead in half by tripling down the line in right and scoring on a sacrifice bunt by pitcher Ashton Brey in the sixth, but Schiefelbein was able to keep the Tigers off the board the rest of the way and ended the game by striking out Kristina Cordova.
Schiefelbein improved to 3-1 on the season for Concordia after yielding five hits and only one run, which was earned, over seven frames. She fanned three and issued just one walk. East Texas Baptist's Brey suffered the loss despite giving up five hits and two runs, including one earned, and striking out eight while not issuing a walk.
In the earlier game against LeTourneau, the Yellow Jackets jumped ahead by plating four runs in the top of the second. After a single by Chloe Cooper brought home the first run, Juliana Tuel went yard with two runners on base to make it 4-0 in favor of the Yellow Jackets.
After LeTourneau scored another run in the third, the Tornados got on the board in the bottom half of the same inning by getting an RBI single from
Lauren Vansickle. A Duhon single and
Alex Smith walk loaded the bases, but hurler Taylor Thibodeaux got out of the major jam by inducing a groundout to short.
A double down the left field line by Smith in the fifth inning to score Duhon brought the Tornados within three runs, but that was as close as the score would get. Concordia left two runners on base in the sixth and seventh innings before suffering the defeat.
Thibodeaux picked up the win by giving up seven hits and two runs, which were both earned, while going the distance. She also registered six strikeouts. Concordia's Moreno was tagged with the loss and fell to 2-2 after surrendering four runs, which were all earned, and four hits over 1.2 frames.
Concordia (5-3), which is a perfect 3-0 against teams that qualified for the 2011 NCAA Tournament, will conclude play at the ASC First Pitch Tournament tomorrow when it faces Ozarks and 2nd-ranked Texas-Tyler at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
