Round Rock, Texas – Freshman catcher Kassey Shaw recorded one hit in each game and drove in a run, but the Concordia University Texas softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader against Howard Payne on Saturday, March 24 at Old Settler's Park. The Tornados fell in the opener, 3-0, before coming up short in the nightcap by a 2-1 decision.

Howard Payne (10-14, ASC 5-7) scored in the top of the first inning of the opener without recording a hit. After Kat Moreno walked the bases loaded, Katie Poerner beat out a throw by shortstop Laura Abellanida to put the Yellow Jackets on the board. The visitors added two more runs that were unearned following an infield error by the Tornados on a popup that would have been for the third out, getting an RBI double from Carissa Zarate and a Vangie Tellez RBI single.

Kayla Castillo, meanwhile, retired the first 13 batters she faced until her perfect game was broken up by Jessica Parish, who was issued a walk in the fifth. Shaw came in as a pinch hitter to break up the no-no an inning later, but the Tornados could not get any offense going the rest of the way.

Castillo, who yielded eight runs against the Tornados yesterday, was near perfect for Howard Payne and improved to 3-6 overall by  recording a one-hit shutout. She allowed only two Tornados to reach base and recorded one strikeout. Concordia's Kat Moreno suffered the loss despite giving up just one earned run. She allowed five hits and fanned eight.

Howard Payne took advantage of two Tornado errors to plate an unearned run in the top of the first inning before Tellez doubled the lead when she singled down the line in left to drive in Zarate. Concordia fought back and sliced the deficit in half in the fourth courtesy of an RBI single by Shaw to score Lauren Vansickle, but the squad would only manage one hit the rest of the way before falling by a one-run decision.

Baillie Trumbell picked up the victory for the Yellow Jackets to end the afternoon with a 5-4 ledger. She scattered five hits and struck out two while not issuing a walk. Concordia's Teylor Schiefelbein dropped to 4-6 despite surrendering two runs, including one earned, in the losing effort. She had four strikeouts and issued just one walk.

Concordia (7-11, ASC 1-7) will visit Texas Lutheran for a four-game series on March 30-31.
