Laura Abellanida had a combined three hits and drove in a go-ahead run, but the Concordia University Texas softball team was swept in a doubleheader by Texas Lutheran on Friday, March 30 at Morck Field. The Bulldogs rallied to take game one, 4-1, before defeating the Tornados by a 10-2 score in six innings.
Concordia got on the scoreboard first in the opener.
Alex Smith blasted a leadoff double to center field before being replaced by
Ashley Boccaccio. The senior was sacrificed over to third by
Kat Moreno and then came home on an Abellanida single to right.
Christina Smith was able to reach on an error to place runners on the corners for
Candace Velasquez, but Smith was caught attempting to steal second to end the threat.
Texas Lutheran (12-14, ASC 7-7) responded by plating the equalizing run in the bottom of the fifth, as Brittany Upton hit an RBI single to right field. After the Tornados left one runner on base in the top half of the sixth, the Bulldogs scored three times in the bottom half of the frame to take their first lead and one they would not relinquish. Kayla McMillan provided what would eventually stand as the game-winning hit.
Megan Carmichael picked up the victory for Texas Lutheran and improved to 4-7. She allowed six hits and one run, which was earned, while striking out three and not issuing a walk. Concordia's
Kat Moreno suffered the loss and fell to 3-6 after giving up seven hits and four runs, which were all earned, over six frames.
The nightcap was a tightly contested battle until the bottom of the fifth inning. After a
Meghan Ferrell single plated
Teylor Schiefelbein to tie the game at 1-all in the fourth, the Bulldogs scored four times one frame later and never looked back.
A
Christina Smith RBI single made it 5-2 in the sixth before Texas Lutheran tallied five runs in the bottom half of the frame and ended the game due to the eight-run rule when Upton scored on an infield error.
Texas Lutheran's Sarah Carmichael earned the victory and ended the day with a 5-5 ledger. She gave up 10 hits and two runs, which were both earned, over six frames. Schiefelbein took the loss for Concordia, which scattered 10 hits but left 11 runners on base, and dropped to 4-7 on the year. She gave up 10 runs, including eight earned, and fanned three while walking two.
Concordia (7-13, ASC 1-9) will look to rebound from the two losses when it takes on the Bulldogs again tomorrow in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
