Abilene, Texas
– Sophomore pitcher Teylor Schiefelbein picked up a save in the opener and the victory in the nightcap to lead the Concordia University Texas softball team to a doubleheader sweep on the road against Hardin-Simmons on Friday, Apr. 13 at Ellis Field. The Tornados rallied from four runs down to win the first game, 5-4, before hanging on for a 3-2 win later in the day.

In the opener, the Cowgirls raced to a 4-0 lead through a pair of innings by plating three runs in the first and one in the second. J. Bradley hit a bases-loaded single to send Clay to the dish and cap the scoring for the hosts.

Concordia, however, started to fight back and got on the board when Erin Duhon doubled in Christina Smith to make 4-1 in the third. Two innings later, the Tornados scored four times to go ahead by one. After an Alexis Lynn RBI single brought the visitors within a run, Alex Smith doubled to right for what would be the eventual game-winning hit. Lauren Vansickle and Meghan Ferrell scored on the play. Kat Moreno and Teylor Schiefelbein then kept the Cowgirls in check by  yielding just two hits the rest of the way.

Concordia's Moreno picked up the victory and improved to 6-8 after allowing six hits and four runs, including one earned, while fanning two over six frames. Schiefelbein earned the save after hurling a scoreless seventh. Blair Wallace suffered the loss for Hardin-Simmons after surrendering six hits and five runs, which were all earned, over seven innings. She fell to 11-6 on the year.

Following the first thrilling victory, Concordia (14-16, ASC 8-10) built up a 3-0 advantage in the nightcap by scoring in the second, fourth and seven frames. Vansickle drove in the first two runs on an RBI double to left center and a one-run single to right. A sacrifice fly by Meghan Ferrell that plated Laura Abellanida gave the Tornados a much-needed insurance run.

After coming up empty in the first six innings, Hardin-Simmons (14-16, ASC 8-10) made a valiant effort to come back and slashed the deficit to one on RBI singles by Molly Kimball and Carley Willis. The Cowgirls loaded the bases with one out, but Schiefelbein got out of the major jam by inducing consecutive popouts to end the game.

Schiefelbein improved to 8-8 by earning the victory for Concordia. She struck out two and walked only one while allowing nine hits and two runs. Hardin-Simmons' Sarah Shubert fell to 9-6 in the losing effort after giving up 10 hits and three runs, including two earned, while striking out five and not issuing a walk.

Concordia and Hardin-Simmons will play another doubleheader in Abilene tomorrow at noon.
