BOX SCORE
Austin, Texas –
Scott Hays went the distance on the mound, but he was outdueled by American Southwest Conference all-time wins leader Brad Orosey as the Concordia University Texas baseball team fell to Texas Lutheran by a score of 1-0 on Friday, Apr. 20 at Tornado Field. The Tornados still need one victory to clinch the ASC West crown.
The two teams traded zeros through the first three innings with only one hit between them. Texas Lutheran (25-11, ASC 15-4), however, dented the scoreboard first by pushing across a single unearned run in the fourth inning.
Concordia (30-6, ASC 16-2) would threaten in the bottom of the fourth, but the squad would come up short.
Kyle Rodriguez led off with a walk and moved to second by way of a
Colton Gommert sacrifice bunt.
Andrew Burns grounded to the pitcher for the second out.
Kyle Bieschke lined a ball that looked destined for the gap in left center, but it hung up just long enough for the Texas Lutheran centerfielder to make a diving catch for the third out to save the lead for the Bulldogs. Orosey stayed in control the rest of the way, allowing the visitors to escape with the victory.
Hays (6-2) took the loss for the Tornados despite going nine innings and giving up only four hits, striking out nine and allowing a single unearned run. Orosey (8-2) earned the complete-game victory for Texas Lutheran by surrendering three hits and striking out four.
The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow at Tornado Field with the first game set to start at 1:00 p.m. Prior to the opener, Concordia will honor its 15-member senior class for its contributions to the program.
