GAME TWO BOX SCORE
Round Rock, Texas –
Christina Smith recorded a combined three hits, including a double, and drove in two runs to lead the Concordia University Texas softball team to a convincing doubleheader sweep of Sul Ross State on Friday, Apr. 6 at Old Settler's Park. The Tornados, who also got a career-best two hits and three RBI from
Melissa Cantu in the second game, won by scores of 10-0 and 9-1.
Concordia (10-16, ASC 4-10) scored at least twice in each of the first four innings in the opener before finishing with 10 runs on just six hits. Smith drew a leadoff walk to start the bottom of the first and came home three plays later on one of five Lobo errors to put the Tornados on the board.
Alex Smith plated
Erin Duhon on a bases-loaded walk. Smith scored again in the second inning on a passed ball before a
Jessica Parish double drove in
Candace Velasquez to make it 4-0.
The Tornados scored two runs on errors and another by drawing a bases loaded walk to go ahead 7-0 after three innings. Concordia only needed one hit to score three more times in the fourth, as Velasquez and Duhon plated runs on fielder's choice plays and
Kat Moreno came home on an error by the center fielder before retiring the side in order in the top of the fifth with a groundout and two strikeouts.
Concordia's Moreno improved to 4-8 on the year by recording her second shutout win of the year. She struck out six, did not issue a walk and yielded only three hits. Sul Ross State's Krista Eklund suffered the loss and fell to 1-8 after giving up seven runs, including five earned, and five hits. She also issued six walks.
Cantu and Smith had the hottest bats in the nightcap, combining for five hits and five RBI. After Sul Ross State scored the game's first run in the top of the first, Concordia responded with three runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead for good. Cantu singled in
Alexis Lynn to tie the game at 1-all and Smith followed with a blast to left center that plated two more runs for the Tornados.
Concordia had its biggest inning of the entire day in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five times. Cantu was able to drive in two by slicing a single down the line in left. A
Jessica Parish walk with the bases loaded capped the scoring in the frame and gave the Tornados an 8-1 cushion. A bases-loaded single by
Laura Abellanida in the sixth scored Lynn and ended the game.
Teylor Schiefelbein collected the victory for Concordia and ended the evening with a 6-8 ledger. She surrendered one run, which was unearned, and scattered only four hits. The sophomore also fanned one batter and did not issue a walk. Andrea Butter of Sul Ross State (4-26, ASC 1-13) was tagged with loss after being lit up for 10 hits and eight runs, which were all earned, over 4.2 frames. She also issued four walks.
Concordia and Sul Ross State will conclude the four-game weekend series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
