Christina Smith and Melissa Cantu combined to record six hits and five RBI in leading the Concordia University Texas softball team to another doubleheader sweep against Sul Ross State on Saturday, Apr. 7 at Old Settler's Park. The Tornados won the first game, 6-0, before taking the second in five innings due to the eight-run rule by a 9-1 score.

In the opener, Concordia quickly went ahead by a 4-0 score by scoring once in the first and three times in the second. Smith, who reached on an infield error, scored an unearned run to start things off on a Meghan Ferrell single to left center. Two Tornados scored on wild pitches by Andrea Butter in the second before Candace Velasquez plated Smith again on a sacrifice fly to center.

Concordia would pad its lead with one run in the fourth and fifth innings, as Cantu made it 5-0 by tripling to left and coming home one play later when Smith reached on an infield error for the second time in the game. A single down the line in left by Laura Abellanida capped the scoring.

Kat Moreno of Concordia recorded her second complete game shutout in as many days by allowing only five hits on singles over seven frames. She struck out six and walked a pair of opposing batters to improve to 5-8 on the year. Sul Ross State's Butter also went the distance, allowing eight hits and six runs, including four earned, while failing to record a strikeout and walking two.

Smith and Cantu started off the nightcap a combined 5-for-5 with a triple and five RBI after Sul Ross State scored its only run of the entire day in the top of the first. Smith put Concordia up 2-1 and ahead for good in the second by beating out what appeared to be a routine groundout to the second baseman, which allowed two runs to score.

Concordia (12-16, ASC 6-10) added four runs in the third to pull away. After a Kassey Shaw double down the line in left scored Lauren Vansickle, Cantu came through with a triple to left center that drove in two more. A Smith single on the next play allowed Cantu to come home for the sixth Tornado run. Ashley Boccaccio helped round out a three-run fourth inning with a sacrifice fly to left before Teylor Schiefelbein got out of the fifth inning unscathed to seal the victory.

Concordia's Schiefelbein improved to 7-8 on the year after giving up just four hits and one run, which was unearned, over five frames. She fanned six and did not walk a batter for the second straight game. Krista Eklund of Sul Ross State (4-28, ASC 1-15) suffered the loss and dropped to 1-9 this season. She surrendered nine runs, including five earned, as well as seven hits while her defense committed five errors behind her.

Concordia, which is still alive for an American Southwest Conference Tournament berth, will visit Hardin-Simmons next weekend on Apr. 13-14.
