Pep Rangel scored two go-ahead goals, but the Concordia University Texas men's soccer team fell to Texas-Tyler by a 4-3 decision in overtime on Saturday, Sept. 29 at Grace High School. The back-and-forth affair featured three ties and lead changes before the golden goal was netted near the end of the extra session.
Texas-Tyler (6-3, ASC 3-1) got on the board first in the opening minutes, but the visitors answered right back and answered with two tallies to take a one-goal lead into the recess.
Joakim Coleman netted the equalizer on a failed clear by the Patriot defense at the midway point before
Pep Rangel put the Tornados ahead with a 35-yard strike in the 33rd minute.
The teams continued their seesaw battle in the second half. The Patriots, who have won the last two ASC championships and are ranked 10th regionally by the NSCAA, evened the score at 2-all when Enoch Shipman headed in a corner kick. Rangel was able to put the Tornados ahead again by firing in a laser from 25 yards away in the 77th minute, but Alonzo Rivera tied the match for the third time just 2:16 later to force overtime.
Concordia had the first chances to score in the extra session.
Matt Ruhe blasted a shot wide before the visitors got another opportunity by being awarded a corner kick in the 96th minute. The Texas-Tyler defense, however, cleared the ball successfully and ended the match shortly afterwards on an Adam Kemp tally in the 97th minute.
Nick Martin made four saves on 19 chances for Concordia, while Reed Casterlin stopped one of the nine shots he saw in the winning effort.
Concordia (2-6-1, ASC 1-4) visits Southwestern on Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 7:30 p.m.
