Georgetown, Texas -
Lena New and
Nicole Young each found the back of the net to lead the Concordia University Texas women's soccer team to a 2-0 road victory over Southwestern on Tuesday, Sept. 4. Myranda Sanders earned her first coaching win on the sidelines.
Southwestern (0-3) started the match in control, but the Tornados were able to score on their only shot of the opening half in the 16th minute. Freshman
Nicole Henderson made a pass down the right side to
Lena New, who fired the ball inside the left post past the goalkeeper while she was arguably being blinded by the sun. The visitors carried the one-goal lead into halftime.
The Pirates came out strong again in the second half. Audry Helburn sent a shot past CTX goalkeeper
Kila Hartom that was headed for the back of the net, but New was there in time to clear it off the goal line to keep the hosts scoreless.
The Tornados used that momentum to come back the other way and double their lead, as
Jordan James ran down the right sideline and sent a cross to the top of the box among a scrum of players from both sides. Concordia's Young got to the ball first and sent it home in the 55th minute. James was credited with an assist on the tally, and the Tornados kept the Pirates off the board the rest of the way.
Concordia's Hartom picked up her first collegiate shutout victory by making five saves on 12 chances. Southwestern's Sarah Nonaka suffered the loss after turning away only two of the six shots she faced.
