Madison Kramr recorded her first career double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds and classmate
Madi Hess netted a career-best 18 points in leading the Concordia University Texas women's basketball team to a 66-59 triumph over Texas Lutheran on Saturday, Jan. 19 at Memorial Gymnasium. With the victory, the Tornados extended their season-best winning streak to seven games and have also won five straight on the road.
Kramr made two quick field goals and gave the Tornados a 6-4 lead by stealing the ball and driving in for a layup at the 17:42 mark. Taylor Dydalewicz, however, answered with a jumper and Italy Taylor drained a 3-pointer to kickstart a 16-5 run for the Bulldogs after the teams were exchanging baskets in the early going. A Dydalewicz bucket made it 20-11 and prompted CTX head coach Rusty Rainbolt to take a timeout with 9:28 left.
After the Bulldogs went ahead by 12 on two occasions, the Tornados started chipping away at the deficit before halftime.
Madi Hess and
Brianna Smith each hit a shot from downtown before
Domonique Liddell and
Briona Chatman followed with field goals to slash the margin down to four at 29-25 with 1:42 on the clock. A
Voneshia Williams layup in the waning seconds created a 32-27 score at the break.
Concordia came out firing in the second half and went ahead 36-34 when
Madison Kramr canned a 3-pointer from the right arc. After
Domonique Liddell put back a missed shot to give the Tornados a 39-34 lead, the Bulldogs came back and took a 42-41 advantage by getting a layup from Chelsey Stolle. Concordia, however, answered right back by getting a 3-pointer from Hess to go ahead by two.
A Natalie Vella trifecta gave the Bulldogs a 48-47 advantage, but that was the last time the hosts would have the lead. Hess netted five straight points by hitting a 3-pointer and driving in for a layup through heavy traffic to give the Tornados a 52-48 edge with 6:30 remaining and the lead for good. The sophomore also made four free throws in the final minute to put the game on ice.
Hess netted a career-high 18 points for Concordia by shooting 5-for-7 from the field, including 4-for-6 from long range, and 4-for-5 from the charity stripe. Kramr's 15 points, 10 rebounds and four steals were all career highs.
Texas Lutheran (6-12, ASC 4-8) was paced by Dydalewicz and Italy Taylor. Dydalewicz posted 15 points and four rebounds, while Taylor had 10 points and three assists.
Concordia (11-6, ASC 8-3) will play a pivotal American Southwest Conference game when it visits Howard Payne on Thursday, Jan. 24 at 5:30 p.m.
