Paige Parrish scored 23 points and shot 67 percent from the field to lead the Concordia University Texas women's basketball team to a 66-63 overtime victory on Thursday, Jan. 3 at the Herrington Patriot Center. The Tornados, who trailed the entire second half before tying the score at the end of regulation, ended the Patriots' seven-game winning streak.
The teams played a one-possession game and exchanged leads for the first seven minutes before the Patriots embarked on a 16-2 run to gain control. A good bucket by She'Cara Humphrey gave the host school a 26-14 advantage shortly after the second media timeout. Texas-Tyler had a 29-18 advantage courtesy of a Lauren Glasco layup, but Concordia fought back and made it a one-possession game again by scoring the half's final nine points. Liddell netted five straight before
Voneshia Williams closed out the scoring with a layup at the 2:36 mark.
Texas-Tyler, however, came out strong in the second half and built its lead back up to nine by the first media timeout. Teylor Seals canned one of her five 3-pointers to give the Patriots a 40-31 advantage. The Patriots went ahead by double figures on a few occasions, but the Tornados did not give up and were able to make it a one-possession game in the final minutes and create a photo finish. After
Madison Kramr made it 55-52 with a layup, Parrish hit a free throw with 1:09 on the clock to make it a two-point game and then stole the ball on the other end.
Brianna Smith then cashed in the opportunity by banking in a shot on an out-of-bounds play to tie the score at 55 and force overtime.
Concordia scored eight uanswered in the extra session to go ahead by a 63-57 score with just over two minutes left. Parrish hit a jumper to start the run and set up a
Katherine Frost layup that gave the Tornados their first lead since the first half. Texas-Tyler threatened and cut the deficit to two, but Parrish made three more free throws before the buzzer to allow the Tornados to escape with the victory.
Parrish, who transferred to Concordia from Texas-Tyler last year, scored 17 of her game-high 23 points in the second half and extra session. She also added two rebounds and two steals. Liddell finished with 16 points and five boards, while Kramr contributed 13 points and two rebounds.
Texas-Tyler (8-4, ASC 3-3), which had its seven-game winning streak snapped was led by Seals and Brittany King. Seals finished with 15 points to lead four Patriots in double figures, while King had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Concordia (6-6, ASC 3-3) visits East Texas Baptist on Saturday, Jan. 5 at 1 p.m.
