DJ Vallier posted the first double-double of her career, but the Concordia University Texas women's basketball team fell to Mary Hardin-Baylor by an 88-84 decision in double overtime on Tuesday, Jan. 29 at the CTX Field House. Prior to the game, the squad recognized all of the members of its successful Adopt-A-Program with a special pregame ceremony to thank them for all of their support.
Concordia (12-8, ASC 9-5) had the edge in the first half and built its lead up to seven three times before Mary Hardin-Baylor fought back to tie the game at 18s by getting a 3-point play from Jovana Miles.
Jessie Pittman and
Brianna Smith followed with consecutive jumpers to put the Tornados ahead by four, but the Crusaders rallied again and took their first lead of the game when Taylor Tucker converted a layup in the waning seconds that put her team up 32-31 at the break.
The second half was a back and forth battle and featured seven ties and 13 lead changes. After a 3-point play by Smith gave the Tornados a 69-66 advantage, Taylor Tucker made a jumper and a free throw with 51 seconds left to tie the game for the eighth time at 69s to force overtime.
The seesaw battle continued into two extra sessions with five more ties and three lead changes before it was all over. A
Tyler Compton layup tied the game at 84 with 14 sceconds left, but Chantal Franco came back and hit a fast break layup to put the Crusaders ahead for good. Taylor Tucker put the game out of reach by nailing two free throws in the final seconds.
Vallier registered her first career double-double for Concordia by registering 13 points and 12 boards to go along with three blocks. Smith netted a team-leading 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while
Katherine Frost had 11 points, four steals and three assists.
Mary Hardin Baylor (5-14, ASC 4-10) was led by Taylor Tucker's double-double effort. She posted 30 points and 17 boards as well as three steals. Miles ended with 10 points and seven rebounds off the bench.
Concordia, which can qualify for the ASC Tournament on Thursday night if Mary Hardin-Baylor loses on the road to Hardin-Simmons, will visit Hardin-Simmons on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 1 p.m.
