AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia University Texas men's soccer team will look to pick up its first win of the season when it hits the road this weekend for a pair of American Southwest Conference (ASC) matches. The Tornados will match up with Howard Payne at 3 p.m. on Friday before playing at Hardin-Simmons at 3 p.m. the following day.
Concordia Texas (0-5-1, 0-1-0 ASC) suffered a 2-1 loss to visiting Louisiana College in the conference opener last Friday.
Matthew Butler scored the Tornados' first goal of the campaign and tied up the match in the 66th minute, but the Wildcats netted the game-winning score with 50 seconds left to escape with the victory.
Butler has accumulated two points this fall, while his goal was helped out by a pass from Ray Obeña.
Nick Martin has started all six matches in net and made 24 saves, while allowing 13 goals.
The Yellow Jackets (1-9-0, 0-2-0 ASC) have lost six consecutive matches, including a pair of league contests last weekend on the road. Howard Payne, which has been outscored this year 43-9, allowed nine second-half goals to Texas-Dallas, which posted a 10-0 victory last Friday. The Yellow Jackets then lost at Ozarks, 6-2, a day later.
Shay Pate leads Howard Payne with nine total points, including a team-high four goals, while Eric Young has registered three. Ryan Young has logged 411 minutes in net, while saving 38 shots and allowing 22 goals.
The Cowboys (2-3-3, 0-0-2 ASC) are unbeaten in their last five outings (three ties and two wins). Hardin-Simmons played both Ozarks and then-No. 13 Texas-Dallas to scoreless draws last weekend.
Eight different players have scored goals for the Cowboys this season, including Kevin McNeal who has recorded a pair. Laurent Maksoud leads the club with four assists, while Michael Vargas has allowed only two goals in nearly 379 minutes in net this fall.
