AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia University Texas women's soccer team will be back in action this weekend when it travels to a pair of American Southwest Conference (ASC) opponents. The Tornados will play Howard Payne at 1 p.m. on Friday in Brownwood before finishing up the weekend with a 1 p.m. match the following day at No. 11 Hardin-Simmons in Abilene.
The Tornados (3-2-2, 1-0-0 ASC) netted a 2-1 win over Louisiana College to open league play last Friday.
Meagan Brown and
Jeni Morales each registered their first goals of the campaign to lead CTX to the win.
Chastity Carrillo posted assists on both of the Tornados' scores.
Carrillo has logged 13 points, including seven assists. The El Paso, Texas, native also is tied for the nation lead with an average of one assist per match.
Meanwhile, Carrillo and
Alex Price have three goals apiece to pace Concordia Texas.
Megan Frontiera, who has started all seven matches in goal, has posted 45 saves and a 1.25 goals against average this fall.
The Lady Jackets (2-7-0, 1-1-0 ASC) split last weekend's conference-opening matches. Howard Payne suffered a 1-0 setback at Texas-Dallas last Friday, but rebounded to rout Ozarks, 5-0, the following day.
Taylor Bicknell has scored four goals to lead the Lady Jackets, including a hat trick in the win over the Lady Eagles last Saturday in Clarksville, Ark. Adrienne Walker leads a trio of Howard Payne goalkeepers after she has saved 39 shots and allowed 21 goals in nearly 538 minutes in net.
The Cowgirls (6-1-0, 2-0-0 ASC) moved up one spot in the national rankings after winning six consecutive matches. Hardin-Simmons rolled in a pair of conference matches last weekend, shutting out Ozarks, 12-0, and defeating Texas-Dallas, 5-1.
The Cowgirls, who are the league's top scoring team at 4.57 goals per match, boast three of the circuit's top 10 goal scorers – Julianne Kucera (6/t-4th), Taylor Thigpen (5/t-6th) and Devon Howard (4/t-9th). Hardin-Simmons' defense has been equally as good, allowing only five goals this year.
