AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia University Texas women's basketball team will open its 15th season in the American Southwest Conference (ASC) on the road this weekend. The Tornados will face Louisiana College at 1 p.m. on Saturday at H.O. West Fieldhouse in Pineville, La., before taking on Mississippi College at 5:30 p.m. in A.E. Wood Coliseum in Clinton, Miss., two days later.
Concordia Texas (2-0) enters its first weekend of league games as one of the top defensive teams in the ASC. The Tornados have limited their first two opponents to only 63 points per contest and lead the conference with 29.5 forced turnovers and 16.5 steals per game.
Concordia's early success also has been fueled by
Tyler Compton, who leads the league with 26.0 points per outing. The senior guard from Lafayette, La., poured in a career-best 30 points in the Tornados' 84-63 win over Southwestern last Friday.
Additionally,
Celeste Laredo and Dominique Liddell also average double figures at 14.5 and 12.0 points per game, respectively.
The Lady Wildcats (1-1), who were the preseason pick to win the ASC title, suffered a 76-66 setback at Loyola (La.) on Tuesday. Louisiana College opened the campaign with a 72-67 victory over Millsaps on Nov. 18. Neka Jones leads the Lady Wildcats with 15.0 points per contest, while Danisha Allison is averaging 10.5 rebounds per game.
The Lady Choctaws (1-1) topped Rust, 70-58, last Saturday to even their record. LaGrange handed Mississippi College a 79-70 loss a day earlier in its season opener. Dominique Walker leads a trio of Lady Choctaws into double figures, as the senior forward is averaging 18.0 points per game. Cara Beverin (17.0) and Alexus Stirgus (12.5) also have been top scoring options this season, while Walker's nine rebounds per outing also lead the squad.
Saturday's contest marks the 15th meeting between Concordia and Louisiana College. The Lady Wildcats hold a slight 8-6 advantage in the all-time series that dates back to 2001, but the Tornados have won two of the last three matchups.
Meanwhile, Monday's meeting between Concordia and Mississippi College marks the 14th in the all-time series. The Lady Choctaws hold a commanding 11-2 advantage over the Tornados. Concordia's last win in the series came on Dec. 17, 2011, with a 69-53 decision in Austin.
