Brandon Garwood earned his first collegiate victory by pitching more five shutout innings on the mound to lead the Concordia University Texas baseball team to a 4-1 win over Sul Ross State on Friday, Feb. 15 at Tornado Field.

Concordia scored the first two runs in a game that began as a pitcher's duel. Brent Schaekel led off the bottom of the first with a double down the line in left, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout to second by Jon McManemin that made it 1-0. Four innings later, Schaekel hit a one-out infield single and doubled the Tornado lead when he was plated on a Casey Skalaban groundout to short.

After Sul Ross State (1-6) sliced the lead in half by getting an RBI double from Ely Gallego, the Tornados took advantage of a Lobo defensive miscue to add insurance in the bottom of the eighth. With two outs and Skalaban on second, Trevor Harlos hit a popup that attracted the attention of three Lobo players. Gallego, however, dropped the ball which allowed Skalaban to score and keep the inning going with runners at the corners. Toran Tillotson then made a clean steal of second, but a throwing error by the Lobo catcher that went into the outfield allowed pinch runner Cade Samuelson to come home for the Tornados' fourth and final run.

Garwood, a freshman, earned his first win and improved to 1-1 overall for Concordia after allowing three hits over 5.1 shutout frames. He also recorded three strikeouts and issued three walks. Ryan Ullmann picked up the save by hurling a scoreless ninth. He posted a strikeout and only allowed one opposing batter to reach on a walk. Sul Ross State's Zak Enrique was tagged with the loss and dropped to 0-3 this spring despite giving up just one earned run over 7.2 innings of work. He struck out six, walked one and surrendered seven hits.

Concordia (2-6) continues play at the Rudy's BBQ and Country Store Tornado Classic tomorrow when it hosts Ozarks at 10 a.m. and Howard Payne at 4 p.m.
