Austin, Texas –
Brianna Smith recorded 24 points and seven rebounds on her Senior Day in leading the Concordia University Texas women's basketball team to an 88-69 win over Howard Payne on Saturday, Feb. 16 at the CTX Field House. The Tornados, which honored their six-member senior class with a postgame ceremony, concluded the regular season on a five-game winning streak.
The opening five minutes of the game was close and featured two ties and five lead changes. But after Breanna Conway made it 14-11 in favor of the Tornados by converting a jump shot, the host school started to pull away and went ahead by double figures when Smith canned a trifecta to create a 21-11 score with 13:28 on the clock. Smith also drained an additional two 3-point field goals in the last five minutes to help give the Tornados a commanding 53-35 lead at the break.
Concordia (17-8, ASC 14-5) continued to stay in control throughout the second half. The margin ballooned to as many as 25 on two occasions courtesy of two free throws and a layup by
Madison Kramr shortly before the midway point. The Yellow Jackets never came closer than 17 the rest of the way.
Smith scored her game-high 24 points for Concordia by shooting 9-for-13 from the floor and 6-for-7 from long range. Vallier contributed a double-double off the bench with 20 points and 13 rebounds, while Kramr added 10 points and four boards.
Breanna Conway recorded a team-high 13 points to pace Howard Payne (21-4, ASC 16-3). Dana Marrs finished with 12 points, five rebounds and four assists.
Concordia will trek to Howard Payne to compete at the American Southwest Conference Tournament, which begins with quarterfinal games on Friday, Feb. 22. The Tornados will be the second seed out of the West Division.
