EDGEWOOD BOX SCORE

CHATHAM BOX SCORE

Tucson, Ariz.
– Arizona native Christina Smith had a career outing by going 3-for-3 with two triples, two stolen bases, three runs scored and two runs batted in to propel the Concordia University Texas softball team to a 9-1 victory over Edgewood in five innings on Thursday, March 14 at Lincoln Park. The Tornados also run-ruled Chatham by earning a 13-3 victory in five frames later in the day.

After Smith tripled and scored in the bottom of the first inning, the Tornados broke the game against Edgewood open by tallying six more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Smith, who is the only player to hail from Arizona on Concordia's roster, opened the flood gates by hitting a two-run triple with one out. Christina Martin and Erin Duhon followed with RBI hits later in the frame before a sacrifice fly by Noey Ruiz plated Martin for Concordia's seven run of the game.

Spitzer put Edgewood (2-14) on the board with an RBI single to left in the top of the fifth, but Ruiz got out of further trouble by inducing a flyout to end the inning. Jessica Parish doubled in Smith, who walked and stole second to begin the bottom of the fifth, and Madeline Rice ended the game due to the eight-run rule on a sacrifice fly to right that scored Savannah Valderas.

Kat Moreno picked up the victory and improved to 5-3 by hurling four scoreless innings for Concordia. She struck out three and issued only one walk. Edgewood's Karlie Klossner suffered the loss and remained winless this spring at 0-4. She was lit up for eight hits and six runs, including five earned, over 3.1 innings of work.

Concordia (10-6) plated four runs in the bottom of the first inning against Chatham and never looked back. Alexis Lynn singled in the first run before Meghan Ferrell belted a two-run double. A Katie Carrizales single that plated Ferrell closed out the scoring the Tornados in the opening frame.

After Chatham (0-8) scored three times in the top of the second, Concordia broke the game open by scoring three times in the bottom half of the second and third frames to take a commanding 10-3 advantage. The Tornados added three more runs in the fourth when Smith came up with two runners on base. The senior was able to send in Sydney Coffey and Carrizales and score herself on an error committed by the right fielder.

Zalysa Perez picked up the victory by allowing five hits and three runs, which were all earned, over three innings of work for Concordia. She struck out two and did not issue a walk to improve her ledger to 3-1. Olivia Traini went the distance in the losing effort and fell to 0-3. She gave up 11 hits and 13 runs, but only two that were earned, while recording one strikeout and issuing two walks.

Concordia concludes play in Arizona when it faces off against Central and Alfred tomorrow.
