Austin, Texas –
Bristan Clingaman threw his first career shutout on the mound to propel the Concordia University Texas baseball team to a 6-0 win over Sul Ross State on Friday, March 22 at Tornado Field. The Tornados moved into sole possession of second place in the American Southwest Conference standings with the victory.
Concordia's Clingaman and Zak Enriquez began the game locked in a pitcher's duel until the Tornados took full advantage of a defensive miscue in the fifth inning. Batting with a runner at second, Bain hit an infield single and advanced to second on a wild throw by Enriquez from the third base side. Hollier, who started the frame with a walk, came all the way home from second to break the scoreless tie.
Brent Schaekel and
Connor Bertsch followed with RBI singles to give the hosts a 3-0 advantage.
The Tornados added three more runs in the sixth, which began with a leadoff with a leadoff double down the line in left by
Andrew Burns. After Burns was able to come home on a wild pitch,
Tyler Bain belted a two-run single through the right side to produce the final outcome.
Clingaman tossed a two-hit shout to improve to 1-0 this season for Concordia (13-13, ASC 5-2). He also recorded five strikeouts and did not issue a walk. Sul Ross State's Zak Enriquez suffered the loss and fell to 1-4 after giving up six runs, which were all earned, in 5.1 innings of work. He also surrendered 10 hits.
Concordia and Sul Ross State (9-13, ASC 1-3) conclude the three-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow that starts at 1 p.m.
