Chance Leissner went a combined 3-for-6 with a homer and four runs batted in to lead the Concordia University Texas baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Howard Payne on Saturday, March 9 at Don Shepard Park. The Tornados won the first game, 8-4, before taking the second that was called due to lightning in the seventh by a 4-0 score to open the season undefeated in American Southwest Conference play.

Concordia plated two runs in the fourth and fifth frames to gain all the insurance it needed to take the weather-shortened nightcap. With Scott Weinschenk in full control on the mound, the Tornados got on the board by getting a sacrifice fly by Trevor Harlos and doubled their lead on a sacrifice bunt by Tyler Bain that plated Brandon Hollier. The visitors tallied runs in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Leissner followed by having Hollier reach on an error by the Yellow Jacket shortstop.

Weinschenk went the distance and earned a six-inning shutout for Concordia by yielding just one hit. He also struck out four and walked three to improve to 3-3. Howard Payne's Gilbert Barrera threw seven innings and fell to 3-3 on the year after giving up seven hits and four runs, including one earned, while fanning five and not issuing a walk.

Earlier in the day, Concordia scored the first five runs of the opener and never looked back. After Andrew Burns singled and Hollier was hit by a pitch, Leissner went yard for the first time of his career to give the Tornados a 3-0 lead in the second. A two-run double by Matt Smith then gave the Tornados a 5-0 cushion to work with.

Howard Payne (12-10, ASC 0-3) was able to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth, but Concordia came right back in the top of the fifth by getting an RBI single by Jon McManemin for all the insurance it needed.

Ullmann pitched a complete game for Concordia and moved his record to 2-1 after surrendering 11 hits and four runs, which were all earned, while striking out five and walking none in seven innings. Howard Payne's Ben Butler suffered the loss and fell to 1-1. He was lit up for eight hits and six runs that were all earned in six innings of work.

Concordia (10-10, ASC 3-0) returns home to face Dallas for a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 12. The first game is slated to start at 3 p.m.
