GAME ONE BOX SCORE
GAME TWO BOX SCORE
Cedar Park, Texas –
Kat Moreno broke her own single-season school record for strikeouts by fanning a career-high nine opposing hitters in leading the Concordia University Texas softball team to an 8-2 victory over Hardin-Simmons in the first game of a twinbill on Friday, Apr. 12 at Cedar Park High School. The Cowgirls won the second game by a 3-1 score to earn the split.
In the opener, Concordia's offense gave Moreno a good cushion to work with in the early going by scoring twice in the first and third innings to build up a 4-0 advantage.
Christina Martin drove in three of the runs, which was capped by going yard for the first time of her career in the third frame.
Hardin-Simmons (10-20-1, ASC 9-9) was able to push two runs across in the top of the fifth, but the Tornado bats came alive by scoring twice in the fifth and sixth innings to allow the hosts to pull away.
Meghan Ferrell blasted a two-run double that scored
Erin Duhon and Martin to produce the final outcome.
Moreno improved her record to 10-6 this season by recording a career-high nine strikeouts while allowing two runs, including one earned, and six hits over seven frames for Concordia. She eclipsed her own single-season record of 90 that was set in 2011 and ended the evening with 91 by striking out Julia Bradley in the seventh inning. Hardin-Simmons' Carol Swindell suffered the loss and dropped to 4-10 after giving up six hits and four runs, which were all earned, in 2.1 frames of work.
In the nightcap, Hardin-Simmons was able to break a scoreless deadlock by scoring three times in the top of the fifth. Carley Willis, Julia Bradley and Tera Davis all had RBI hits in the frame to put the Cowgirls in control.
Concordia (19-13, ASC 8-10) attempted to rally in the bottom of the sixth.
Christina Smith drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on the next play courtesy of a single to right by
Alexis Lynn. Smith then came home on a
Katie Carrizales single through the right side. The Tornados loaded the bases by getting a single from
Jessica Parish, but Hardin-Simmons pitcher Brittany Acosta got out of the jam by forcing the next CTX hitter to pop into a double play to second baseman Mac Clay.
Sydney Coffey took the loss for Concordia after surrendering eight hits and three runs that were all earned in 4.1 innings of work. Her record dropped to 3-5. Hardin-Simmons' Acosta went the distance in the winning effort and moved ahead to 7-10 this spring by registering two strikeouts and allowing five hits and an earned run.
Concordia and Hardin-Simmons will wrap up the pivotal four-game weekend series with a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon beginning at noon.
