Ryan Ullmann hurled his second shutout of the season in the opener as the Concordia University Texas baseball team split a twinbill against Texas Lutheran on Saturday, Apr. 20 at Katt-Isbel Field. The Tornados won the opener, 1-0, to clinch hosting rights for next weekend's American Southwest Conference Crossover Series before dropping the nightcap by a 6-0 decision.

After the teams combined to play eight scoreless frames in the opener, Concordia was able to break the scoreless deadlock in the top of the ninth. Casey Worsham got things going by belting a one-out double to right center and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Brent Schaekel then hit a sacrifice fly to plate the sophomore for the game's only run, as Ullman kept the Bulldogs off the board in the bottom half of the inning to preserve the clean sheet.

Concordia's Ullmann, who has hurled 25 straight innings over five appearances without issuing a walk, picked up the shutout victory by going the distance on the mound. He allowed six hits and recorded seven strikeouts. Aaron Aleman took the loss after giving up six hits and one run, which was earned, while fanning five and walking six over 8.1 innings of work.

Texas Lutheran (30-10, ASC 16-2) took quick control of the nightcap by scoring five runs in the top of the first and never looked back. Derek Kanas and Christian DeBlanc each drove in a pair of runs on consecutive plays by hitting a single and double, respectively. Matthew Gallaway then closed out the scoring with an RBI single in the sixth.

Scott Weinschenk suffered the loss for Concordia and dropped to 5-5 after yielding seven hits and five runs, which were all earned, over three frames. Texas Lutheran's Kellen McGriff got the win and moved his ledger to a perfect 4-0. He surrendered three hits while striking out five and walking only one in six innings of action.

Concordia (20-20, ASC 11-7) will host a best-of-three ASC playoff series for the third straight season beginning on Friday, Apr. 26 against the third seed in the East Division. If the program is successful and advances, the Tornados will play in the double-elimination championship event the following weekend at the site of the highest seed remaining in the East Division with an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament at stake. Tornado Field will be the site of tan he NCAA West Regional from May 15-19.
