Alpine, Texas – Senior
Kat Moreno eclipsed the school record for career strikeouts and classmate
Meghan Ferrell scattered a combined four hits to help lead the Concordia University Texas softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Sul Ross State on Friday, Apr. 5 at Lady Lobo Field. The Tornados took the opener, 4-1, before winning by a 4-2 decision in the nightcap.
Concordia got on the board quickly in the top of the first of the opener and never looked back.
Jessica Parish and
Erin Duhon each hit RBI singles to give the Tornados an early 2-0 lead.
Sul Ross State (8-22, ASC 3-11) challenged the Tornados by slicing the deficit in half by taking advantage of a defensive miscus in the bottom of the fifth, but the visitors quickly recovered and added one run in the sixth and another in the seventh to pull away.
Christina Smith and Duhon drove in the runs on singles to give their team more than enough insurance to come away with the win.
Moreno, who broke the strikeout record by fanning Dayna Whitmire in the fourth, improved her record to 9-5 by picking up the victory for Concordia. She allowed five hits and one run, which was unearned, while fanning seven and issuing just one walk. Sul Ross State's Alexandria Galvan suffered the loss and fell to 3-9 after yielding 11 hits and four runs, including three that were earned.
In the nightcap,
Christina Smith blasted a leadoff triple and scored two plays letter on a single to right by Parish. The Tornados then padded their lead by plating three runs in the fourth, beginning with an RBI double by Ferrell that was followed by a triple to center by
Katie Carrizales.
Sul Ross State, however, attempted to rally in the bottom of the second. Menchaca scored to put the Lobos on the board after reaching on an error in the Tornado outfield before Contreras singled in Whitmire. But reliever
Noey Ruiz was able to get the visitors out of the jam with the bases loaded by recording two straight outs.
Sydney Coffey earned the win and moved up to 3-4 on the season for Concordia after hurling six shutout innings and allowing four hits.
Noey Ruiz earned her first save by hurling two-thirds of an inning to close out the game. Sul Ross State's Keri McShain was tagged with the setback. She gave up six hits and four runs, including three earned, while striking out four and not issuing a walk.
Concordia (17-11, ASC 6-8) and Sul Ross State will play another doubleheader tomorrow afternoon. The first game is slated to start at noon.
