AUSTIN, Texas – Tyler Compton scored a career-high 37 points and
Margaret Milling set the program's all-time record for steals, as the Concordia University Texas women's basketball team blew past Hardin-Simmons, 90-68, on Saturday afternoon at Concordia Fieldhouse.
With the win, the Tornados (11-14, 9-13 ASC) clinched a spot in next week's American Southwest Conference Tournament, which will take place in Tyler, Texas.
Compton led all scorers with her third 30-point game of the season. The Lafayette, La., native was 13-of-19 from the floor and 11-of-14 from the free-throw line. She also dished out eight assists.
Meanwhile, Milling racked up six steals to push her career total to 324, which broke the old program standard (318) set by Kassandra Bills (2005-09). The Fort Worth product, who also scored 11 points, wasted no time to set the record, picking off a pass just 17 seconds into the contest.
Concordia opened the game on a 22-4 run and rolled the rest of the way.
The Tornados led wire-to-wire and increased their advantage to as much as 24 in the contest.
Sara Vargas scored 25 points to pace the Cowgirls (8-17, 8-14 ASC), who still have a chance to qualify for the league's postseason tournament.
The full tournament field will be revealed following Monday's final game between East Texas Baptist and LeTourneau. Concordia will play a quarterfinal game on Friday, Feb. 28. The Tornados' opponent will be determined on Monday night.
