AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia University Texas women's basketball team will make its fourth appearance and third consecutive in the American Southwest Conference (ASC) Tournament this weekend. The Tornados earned the No. 7 seed and will face second-seeded Texas-Dallas in a quarterfinal matchup at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Herrington Patriot Center in Tyler.
Concordia Texas (11-14) is one of only four current ASC teams that have won the league's postseason tournament. The Tornados captured the program's only ASC Tournament championship in 2012 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Concordia won its regular-season finale, 90-68, over Hardin-Simmons last Saturday to clinch a berth in the tournament. The Tornados finished tied for sixth in the league standings with Ozarks, but received the seventh seed due to the conference's tie-breaking policy.
The Comets (20-5) return to the league tournament to defend their title as the No. 2 seed. Texas-Dallas is making its seventh consecutive appearance in the ASC Tournament on Friday.
The two teams met twice this season with the Comets sweeping the regular-season series. Texas-Dallas posted a 77-63 victory over CTX on Jan. 18 in Richardson, and the Comets collected an 81-69 win last Thursday in Austin.
The winner of Friday's second quarterfinal contest will meet the winner of the Mary Hardin-Baylor/Ozarks matchup at 1 p.m. Saturday. The tournament championship game is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Sunday.
