AUSTIN, Texas – Scott Weinschenk fired his first career nine-inning shutout, allowing just four hits, and 20th-ranked Concordia University Texas cruised to a 10-0 victory over East Texas Baptist in the American Southwest Conference series opener on Friday night at Tornado Field.
Weinschenk (4-1), who fanned nine, worked five hitless frames, but Josh Warbington broke up the no-hit bid with a single through the right side of the infield to lead off the sixth inning.
The right-hander threw 102 pitches, including 75 strikes to lead the Tornados (14-2, 11-1 ASC) to their fifth consecutive win.
Concordia Texas also grabbed sole possession of first place in the league standings, as 22nd-ranked LeTourneau dropped a 5-1 decision at Mississippi College.
The Tornados' lineup backed up Weinschenk with 12 hits, including five for extra bases, and four innings with multiple runs.
Connor Bertsch led the way with a 2-for-3 performance that included two doubles and four RBIs.
Brandon Hollier was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and
Cole Calder tallied three hits, including a double, drove in a run and stole a base.
Brent Schaekel was 1-for-1 with a pair of walks and drove in a run. The Tomball, Texas, native also became Concordia's all-time leader in stolen bases after swiping second base in the second inning. Schaekel has amassed 61 stolen bases, topping the mark set by Lance Johnson (1991-94) 20 years ago.
The Tornados took an early lead as Bertsch hammered a two-run double to right field in the first inning.
Two frames later, Bertsch struck again with another two-run double to give CTX a 4-0 advantage.
Concordia scored a run in the fourth, three in the fifth and two more in the sixth to build the 10-run lead.

The series will conclude on Saturday with a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
