AUSTIN, Texas – Howard Payne had only four hits, but a run-scoring single by Jake Sadler in the ninth inning helped the Yellow Jackets to a 1-0 win over 16th-ranked Concordia University Texas on Friday night at Tornado Field.

Matthew Parks topped Scott Weinschenk in a pitchers' duel. The left-hander scattered eight hits and walked five, but struck out six and became just the second pitcher this spring to hold the Tornados (21-7, 16-5 ASC) scoreless.

Parks (7-2), who threw 140 pitches (79 strikes), worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning after forcing Tyler Bain to ground out.

Concordia Texas stranded 11 runners on the basepaths on the night, including nine in scoring position.

Weinschenk (6-2) logged 12 strikeouts and allowed only four hits in a 117-pitch effort (82 strikes).

Kyle Kulczyk started the ninth for the Yellow Jackets (14-13, 11-11 ASC) with a single to right center that Ragan Pope laid out for but was unable to come up with. Will Roberts then placed a sacrifice bunt down the first-base line, which allowed CJ Schumann, who came on as a pinch runner, to advance to second base. Sadler then hit an 0-2 offering from Weinschenk back through the middle of the infield and Schumann came around to score the game's lone run.

The Tornados' best scoring chance came in the seventh.

Tyler Bain led off the frame with a walk and moved up into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Pope. Colton Poindexter then bounced a 1-1 pitch from Parks on the right side of the infield. Howard Payne second baseman Lucas Creed knocked down the ball in shallow right field and threw home in time for Matthew Daniel to apply a tag on Bain, who was attempting to score from second.

Concordia finished the contest with eight hits, all singles. Poindexter, Chance Leissner and Kyle Rodriguez all tallied two hits apiece.

The series is scheduled to conclude Saturday with a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
