BOX SCORE TYLER, Texas – Brent Schaekel had a leadoff single, but it was the only hit the 20th-ranked Concordia University Texas baseball team was able to muster on Thursday night in a 4-1 loss to Texas-Tyler in an American Southwest Conference (ASC) series opener at Irwin Field.
The Patriots (11-21, 9-16 ASC), who snapped a seven-game losing streak, used three pitchers to keep the Tornados' lineup off balance.
Gunner Baker (1-1) hurled seven innings and gave up the only hit and an unearned run, while Cade Suggs and Patrick Michon (save, 1) combined to log a pair of scoreless panels to finish out the contest.
Schaekel stole second base following his single and then scored on an error to give Concordia Texas (23-8, 18-6 ASC) the early advantage.
Texas-Tyler, which pounded out 13 hits, took the lead with a three-run fifth inning.
Three frames later, the Patriots added an insurance run on a wild pitch.
The Tornados put a pair of runners on base in the ninth on a walk and an error, but Michon stranded them after posting a strikeout to end the game.
Scott Weinschenk (6-3) took the loss after allowing three runs on nine hits in 5.1 innings of work. The right-hander also struck out five.
The series is slated to conclude with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Friday.
