Tornados Top Bulldogs 98-91 in Dramatic Double Overtime Contest

BOX SCORE SEGUIN, Texas -- Isis Johnson's 30 points helped lift the Concordia Texas women's basketball team (1-1) over Texas Lutheran at Memorial Gymnasium Saturday afternoon by a 98-91 tally in double overtime.

The Bulldogs (1-1) scored the first bucket of the second overtime to take an 83-81 lead with 4:47 left. The Tornados would tie things up at 83 and take an 85-83 lead with on a pair of layups from Johnson with 3:42 left. Concordia never looked back despite Texas Lutheran drawing within one at the 1:49 mark. After that, the Tornados were finally able to pull away period thanks to a 7-0 run over the span of about 90 seconds, holding their largest lead of the game at 96-89 with 34 seconds to play. Both teams added a basket as time wound down.

Johnson's 30 points established a new career high and were the most by a Tornado player since Brianna Smith scored 36 against Sul Ross on Jan. 26, 2013. The team's 98 points were also the most since a 102-48 victory over the same Lobos team on Feb. 14, 2013. Jaela Dejean added a CTX career-best 26 points.

Additionally, Johnson grabbed 12 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Alexis Copeland dished out a game-high six assists.

The Tornados outshot the Bulldogs at a 66.7 percent clip (10-of-15) to TLU's 44.4 percent (8-of-18) from the field in the two overtime periods to earn the win. Texas Lutheran had the upperhand at the end of regulation, shooting 49.2 percent from the floor (29-of-59) to Concordia's 35.8 percent (24-of-67).

Concordia trailed by 13 with 9:09 left in the second quarter but began to chip away at the Texas Lutheran lead. However, the Bulldogs went into halftime with a 41-34 advantage despite the Tornados outscoring their hosts 20-16 in the period.

Concordia came out of the intermission with the momentum and used a 13-1 run over the last four and a half minutes of the third quarter to take a 55-51 lead into the fourth quarter. 

The Tornados led by five at 69-64 with less than a minute to go, but the Bulldogs' Savannah Hight hit the game-tying layup with five seconds left in regulation to cap a 5-0 TLU spurt.

In the first overtime, the two squads traded early blows but it was Concordia who would creep out to a four-point advantage with 1:47 left to play. After TLU's Bailey Champion converted a pair of free throws cut the lead to two, Johnson split a pair on the other side to put Concordia back up by three. The Bulldogs' Autumn Shed hit a 3-pointer with four seconds left in the period to tie the game at 79 and force double overtime.

The Tornados host Schreiner Monday, Nov. 23 at 5:30 p.m. to open the home slate.
