Tornados' Fourth Quarter Rally Not Enough to Climb Over Mountaineers

Schreiner Snaps Concordia's Seven-Game Streak in 69-66 Heartbreaker

BOX SCORE KERRVILLE, Texas -- The Concordia Texas women's basketball team suffered just its second loss of the season Wednesday night in a heartbreaking 69-66 decision at Schreiner.

Isis Johnson led the Tornados with 11 points, Emily Cullers and Jayci Padgett added 10 each. The Mountaineers' Kelsie Jackson led all scores with 18 points.

Concordia (7-2) began the final quarter on  a 12-2 run to take a 54-52 lead with 4:39 remaining in regulation. The two squads would engage in a battle over the next minute-plus, trading the lead once and reaching three ties. Schreiner (2-8) regained the lead with 3:17 left, but Isis Johnson nailed a jumper to tie the contest for the sixth and final time. Schreiner would then go on a 5-1 run, taking a 63-59 lead with 1:24 on the clock. Concordia was able to draw within a point at 64-63 on Kayla Strobel's mid-range bucket with 13 seconds left. After a quick foul, Kelsie Jackson sealed the game for the Mountaineers after hitting a pair of free throws. Jaela Dejean tossed up a 3-point attempt as time expired, but it fell short.

The eventful fourth quarter was the result of a strong effort by Concordia, who erased an early 11-point lead. Schreiner opened the contest on a 12-1 run, holding the Tornados without a field goal for the game's first five minutes. CTX closed the first quarter on a 11-5 spurt of its own, holding SU to just one basket and a pair of free throws in the period's final four-plus minutes.

The Tornados eventually rallied to tie the contest at 23 midway through the second stanza, but the Mountaineers went into the locker room with a 30-27 advantage. Schreiner regained a 10-point lead with 3:42 left in the third quarter. Concordia closed the gap to eight to set up the dramatic fourth period.

The Tornados remain on the road into the New Year, taking on East Texas Baptist on Sat., Jan. 2nd at 1 p.m.
