AUSTIN, Texas – Cameron Cox pitched a three-hit shutout, and the Concordia University Texas baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep against Louisiana College on Friday at Tornado Field. The Tornados won the opener 4-0 and took the nightcap 7-4.
Cox (3-0) surrendered just three singles and struck out five while earning his first career shutout in the opener. The right-hander was backed up with four runs in the first three innings.
Colton Poindexter drove in a pair of runs, while
Michael Evan and
Race Mellman both collected two hits and an RBI.
In the nightcap, the Tornados held a 4-1 lead after four innings. However, the Wildcats (3-5, 1-4 ASC) scored three times in the sixth inning to pull even.
Concordia Texas (8-3, 4-0 ASC) responded in the bottom of the seventh with three runs to go in front for good.
Evan drove in the go ahead run in the seventh.
Cole Calder singled and was moved up to second base on
Luke Kress' sacrifice bunt. Following a pitching change, Calder stole third base and then Evan ripped a single through the infield that allowed him to trot home. After
Race Mellman drew a walk,
Caleb Maddox reached on an error that allowed Evan to score from second base. Mellman, who went to third on the error, then stole home as Maddox swiped second base, capping the scoring.
Justin Traxler (1-1) picked up the win in relief. The right-hander allowed just one hit and fanned two over the final 3.1 frames.
Prior to the second game, both teams came together on the field and shaved their heads in an attempt to raise awareness for kids' cancer. Stylists from Sport Clips helped shaved all of the CTX players' heads and head coach
Tommy Boggs. Louisiana College Head Coach Mike Byrnes and members of his team also joined in the event.
The two teams will close out the series at 12 p.m. Saturday.
