AUSTIN, Texas – Gunnar Hollier drove in two runs and
Dillon Stavinoha hurled three scoreless frames out of the bullpen, as the Concordia University Texas baseball team came from behind to defeat DeSales in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon at Tornado Field.
The Tornados (10-3) pushed their winning streak to six games, thanks to strong performances by six pitchers and timely hitting.
The Bulldogs (0-1) jumped out in front in the second inning when
Daniel Garza uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Conner Lafferty to score from third base.
However, Concordia Texas pulled even a frame later, as
Wilkes Swaim and
Alex Steadman pulled off a double steal. Swaim used a delayed steal to draw a throw from DeSales catcher Nick Fischer, which allowed Steadman to swipe home.
The Tornados were held without a hit until the fourth inning, when Hollier pulled a single through the left side, driving in Mellman from second base.
Hollier struck again in the sixth, as the right-handed hitter dumped a single into left field, which allowed
Clifton Hendrix to score from second base.
The Tornados pushed across their final tally in the seventh, as
Connor Bertsch hit a fly ball to left field that was dropped, allowing
Michael Evan to come all the way around from first.
The Bulldogs capped the scoring in the eighth with a RBI single by Lafferty.
Concordia was out-hit by DeSales in the contest, 5-4. Hollier tallied two singles, while Evan had a pair of hits, including a triple.
Stavinoha (2-0) picked up the victory after allowing only one hit during his stint. The left-hander also struck out two batters.
Matthew Brown (1) earned the save after retiring DeSales in order in the ninth.
Bulldogs starting pitching Adam Donovan (0-1) suffered the loss after yielding three runs on three hits over six panels. The right-hander also issued four walks, hit a batter and fanned six.
The Tornados will return to action next weekend in a three-game conference series at Texas-Dallas.
