Women's Basketball Rolls Past Sul Ross State, 72-52

Tornados snap seven-game skid with strong defensive effort.

BOX SCORE AUSTIN, Texas -- The Concordia Texas women's basketball team used a huge first quarter to earn their first conference victory of the season. The Tornados reigned triumphant over Sul Ross State 72-52 Thursday at the Concordia Fieldhouse.

With the win, CTX snapped a seven-game skid.

Isis Johnson finished the night with a game-high 18 points. Emily Cullers and Ariana Marks tallied 14 and 10 points respectively to lead the CTX (1-6 ASC, 8-8) scoring effort. Johnson tied Brenisha Payne with a team-best seven rebounds. Alexis Copeland matched her season-high with six assists.

As a team, the Tornados went 16-of-21 from the free throw line.

The Tornados opend the game on a 13-0 run spanning over five minutes and finished the first quarter up 22-8 in a game they led wire to wire. Sul Ross (1-7 ASC, 4-14) went on a rally that spanned the closing moments of the third quarter and the start of the fourth to draw within 11 at 52-41 with 8:40 to play. Concordia would go on to outscore the SRSU 20-11 over the remaining time.

"Our girls really responded to the challenge at hand. Obviously we've had some difficulties this semester, but we came out and we fought hard and we executed the game plan," head coach Matt Wallis said. "I thought it was a total team effort and I was really proud of the girls."

The Tornados conclude the homestand Saturday against Howard Payne. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m.
