BOX SCORE AUSTIN, Texas -- The Concordia Texas women's basketball team wrapped up its three-game homestand Saturday with a 60-51 setback against Howard Payne at the Concordia Fieldhouse.
The Lady Jackets (5-3 ASC, 10-8) used a big second quarter in addition to a late 9-2 fourth quarter run to secure the win.
As a team, Concordia struggled from the field offensively, going 15-of-67 overall from the field and 0-for-10 from beyond the arc. However, the Tornados were able to stay close thorughout much of the game thanks to a 21-of-32 performance at the free throw line. Howard Payne was 21-for-62 from the field including 4-of-14 from long range. The Lady Jackets were 14-of-22 from the free throw line. HPU had a slight 53-50 edge on the boards.
Isis Johnson grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds and also tallied 10 points for her third double-double of the season.
Jaela Dejean had a team-high 11 points. The Lady Jackets' Danyel Bradly scored a game-best 14 points.
HPU opened the game on a 4-0 run, but CTX was able to overcome it with a 7-2 spurt to close the first quarter.up 7-6. The Lady Jackets came into the second period fired up, holding the Tornados to just one field goal. Howard Payne went into the half with a 30-19 advantage.
The Jackets made the first basket of the second half to take a 13-point lead, but Concordia had other plans. Over the next two minutes, the Tornados went on a 10-0 run to draw within three. After an HPU triple, CTX scored four straight to get within two points, but the Yellow Jackets answered by grabbing the next seven straight points. The Tornados closed the third trailing 44-39.
Concordia got within three once again with just over five minutes left in regulation, but Howard Payne outscored the Tornados down the stretch, setting up the aforementioned rally.
Concordia goes on the road for a pair of games in Abilene, Texas. First up, it's a non-conference battle at McMurry on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
