BOX SCORE AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia Texas Women's Basketball team kicked off their 2016 campaign Tuesday night defeating Schreiner 66-58, led by Emily Cullers' career-best 23-point outing.
The Tornados used a 20-9 fourth quarter to surpass the Mountaineers in the comeback effort on an emotional evening.
Concordia debuted patches with the letters "TC" on the front of their jerseys, in honor of former player Tyler Compton, who lost her life in a car accident in August. Both teams also stood in honor of her memory taking a moment of silence prior to the contest.
Schreiner got on the board to start the second quarter on a two-point basket and foul shot by Sabriyyah Fennell (3-0), before the Tornados went on a 15-0 run with four minutes remaining to take the lead, 15-3. Emily Cullers lead Concordia with nine points in the quarter, as the Tornados finished out the first quarter with a 24-8 lead.
The Mountaineers bounced back in the second outscoring Concordia 21-12, but Concordia maintained the lead at halftime, 36-28. Cullers led the Tornados with 13 points and Fennell led Schreiner with nine points in the half.
Schreiner took their first lead of the half with four minutes remaining in the third and maintained their lead through the third, 49-45.
The Tornados and Mountaineers went down to the buzzer in the fourth with Concordia taking the lead with under a minute to play. The Tornados finished the game with a 66-58 victory.
Mercedes Ellison contributed 10 points in the winning effort for CTX. Fennell led Schreiner posting a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
The Tornados will be back in action next Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 5:30 p.m. as the squad hosts Southwestern inside the Concordia Fieldhouse.
