BOX SCORE GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Concordia Texas women's basketball team beat Southwestern 59-45 in the squads' second and final meeting of the 2016-17 campaign. The victory gave CTX its first 4-0 start since the 2011-12 season.
The Tornados held the Pirates without a field goal for the entire second quarter during a 19-1 rally to secure the victory. An old-fashioned 3-point play from Jaela Dejean ended the rally at 22-1 early in the third quarter.
Southwestern ended the opening quarter with a 16-13 lead, but had a 13-7 advantage with 1:34 left to play in the period. CTX closed the quarter on a 6-3 spurt and entered the second with all of the momentum.
The Tornados' push put them on top 32-17 at the break.
After three, Concordia led 45-29. The lead stretched to 20 (51-31) with 7:58 left in the fourth. Southwestern clawed back and came within nine as the Pirates kept the Tornados to just three points during a five minute stretch in the final quarter. CTX clamped down on defense, however, and would end the contest with five straight free throws.
The Tornado defense held Southwestern to just 29.6 percent shooting from the floor while CTX hit 41.5 percent of its shots.
Mercedes Ellison finished with a game-high 14 points and led a pack of three Tornados in double figures. Jaela Dejean added 11 and Kaycie Dunkerley finished with 10 points. Raven Cato grabbed a team-high seven boards.
Concordia returns to action Dec. 1 against Belhaven in the first doubleheader of the year. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m. at the Concordia Fieldhouse.
