BOX SCORE AUSTIN, Texas -- The Concordia Texas women's basketball team used a full-team effort from start to finish in an 85-62 victory over Louisiana College Monday afternoon.
The Tornados had four double-digit scorers led by Jaela Dejean's 18 points, which included nine from the charity stripe. Brenisha Payne, Emily Cullers, and Mercedes Ellison had 13, 12 and 10 respectively. Dejean and Cullers each almost had double-doubles as Dejean finished with eight assists, while Cullers had a team-high eight rebounds. CTX shot 52 percent from the field, including 39 percent from three and went 22-28 from the free-throw line.
The Tornados got off to a slow start in the first quarter as they did not score their first bucket until two minutes into the game. After taking a 5-4 lead on a Raven Cato three, CTX closed out the quarter on a 13-4 run and led 18-8 after one. The Tornados began the second quarter with a hot 13-4 run start to take a commanding 33-12 lead with 5:15 left in the quarter. Cullers had nine points on three three-pointers and helped her squad to 28 points as a team in the second quarter alone, taking a 46-26 lead into halftime.
Louisiana College came out of halftime on a 15-6 run to cut CTX's deficit to 11 with five minutes left in the third quarter, but Kaycie Dunkerley made the rare four-point-play on an assist from Ellison to push the Tornados' lead back up to 15. CTX took a 61-43 lead into the fourth quarter. The Tornados maintained their double digit lead throughout the fourth quarter taking their biggest lead of the game of 72-49 with 6:07 left in the game. Two free throws by Megan Musso closed out a 85-62 win.
CTX improves to 8-2 (2-2) on the season, earning their second consecutive conference win and will now take a short break before heading to Colorado Spring, Colo., to compete in the Colorado Classic on Dec. 29-30.
