BOX SCORE COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The Concordia Texas women's basketball team opened the Pikes Peak Holiday Classic with a 64-63 victory over Colorado College on Thursday night in Colorado Springs.
Jaela Dejean and Mercedes Ellison both scored 13 points apiece while Meghan Musso poured in 11 points. The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair between the Tornados and Tigers and ended with the score all tied up at 11.
The second quarter remained close as CTX led 19-18 with 7:11 left in the first half. The Tornados then went on a 7-0 capped by a Brenisha Payne three-pointer to extend their lead to 26-18. CTX headed to the locker room up 35-27 at the half, led by Dejean's 11 points. Concordia had 10 second chance points as a team in the second quarter alone.Â
The Tornados continued to maintain their lead early in the third quarter and took their biggest lead of the game at 48-34 after an Ellison free-throw with 3:20 left in the quarter. Musso scored five of her 11 points in the quarter and CTX took a 53-41 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Tornados maintained a double-digit lead for most of the fourth quarter leading 64-51 with 3:41 left in the game. Colorado College would go on a 12-0 run to cut the CTX lead to 64-63 with six seconds remaining in the game. Kaycie Dunkerley was unable to connect on either of her free throws and allowed the Tigers one last chance with two seconds, but fortunately, CC missed at the buzzer and the Tornados won 64-63.
CTX has won four straight and is now 9-2 on the season and will play its second and final game of the tournament against Luther College Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. Central.
