Concordia Splits First Two Baseball Contests

Lions spoil Tornados' 2016 Debut; CTX shuts out George Fox in nightcap

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 AUSTIN, Texas -- The Concordia Texas baseball team fell 4-2 in its opening contest Friday afternoon against Piedmont. The Tornados would later bounce back with a  6-0 shutout win over George Fox.

GAME ONE - PIEDMONT 4, CONCORDIA 2

The Lions (2-1) scored first in the top of the third on an RBI single by Will Skidmore.

After Piedomont left the bases loaded in the top of the fourth, the Tornados (0-1) took advantage in the home half with two runs. Colton Poindexter drove in the first run on an RBI single. Connor Bertsch would come home on a wild pitch to give CTX a 2-1 lead.

The score wouldn't hold long as the Lions tallied three runs in the very next half-inning. Evan Gresham drove in the game-tying run on a sacrifice fly. Breck Davidson brought in the eventual game-winner on an RBI sacrifice bunt. The third run came across on an RBI single by Zach Langley.

Justin Traxler suffered the loss for Concordia, yielding all four runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks.

GAME TWO - CONCORDIA 6, GEORGE FOX 0

Lane Hobbs was magnificent for the Tornados (1-1) against the Bruins (0-2) in Friday's nightcap. The hurler struck out nine while surrendering just three hits and two walks. Dillon Stavinoah came on in relief and picked up a three-inning save, allowing three hits and fanning three.

Concordia scored in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout by Michael Evan, cashing in on a leadoff double from Caleb Maddox. Cameron Rape would add an RBI single in the fifth to make it 2-0 Tornados.

CTX added four insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth in a frame where the Tornados sent nine to the plate.

George Fox scattered six hits and two walks. The Bruins left six baserunners stranded.

Saturday will be a full day of baseball at Tornado Field as GFU takes on Pomona-Pitzer at 11 a.m. Later. Concordia takes on the Sagehens at 2:30 p.m. The Bruins will then take on top-10-ranked Rhodes at 6 p.m.
