Poindexter's 3-Run Homer in 10th Lifts Tornados over Pirates

Colton Poindexter hits Concordia's first homer of the season.

BOX SCORE GEORGETOWN, Texas -- Colton Poindexter made Southwestern pay for an error and a walk with a three-run homer over the left field wlal on a 2-0 pitch in the top of the 10th inning at Rockwell Field Friday evening. It was Concordia's first long ball of the season and gave the Tornados a 5-3 win on the road.

The No. 18 Tornados (3-4) set up the moon shot with Wilkes Swaim reaching on a two-base error with one down. Then, Connor Bertsch walked on a 3-2 pitch. Pirate (2-9) reliever Joe McCormack then retired Michael Evan on the infield fly rule before giving up the blast. All three runs were unearned.

Southwestern able to get one of those runs back in the bottom of the 10th, but CTX reliever Justin Traxler was able to leave a runner on third as he fanned the potential tying run with two down.

The Pirates scored first in the home half of the second on a sacrifice fly. The Tornados returned the favor in the top of the third.

The game stayed locked at one until Concordia's Race Mellman singled in a run in the top of the sixth. Southwestern answered in the bottom of the frame after a base hit and a pair of Tornado errors.

The game stayed locked at two until Poindexter's home run.

Josh Smith went six innings in the start, striking out 10 and scattering four hits. His counterpart, Jacob Kendra, also went six and struck out fout, walking six and giving up three hits. Neither pitcher took home a decision, despite quality starts.

Traxler picked up the victory for the Tornados, improving his record to 1-1. He went four innings and gave up one run on two hits while striking out seven. McCormack was saddled with the loss after four inniongs of relief work. 

Concordia and Southwestern resume the series at Tornado Field tomorrow at 1 p.m.
