BOX SCORE 2 CLARKSVILLE, Ark. – The Concordia Texas baseball team earned its first two ASC victories of the season Saturday at Ozarks. The Tornados won both contests in convincing fashion, 9-0 and 9-3, as the offense exploded for 28 hits Saturday.
Race Mellman was 4-for-8 on the day with a triple, homer and four RBI. Bret Leiferman was 5-of-8 at the plate with five runs scored. In fact only five Tornados (6-7, 2-1 ASC) who made a plate appearance failed to reach base in 16 innings of play on the afternoon.
GAME ONE – CTX 9, Ozarks 0 (7 inn.)
Lane Hobbs continues to be one of the most effective pitchers for the Tornados this season. The junior tossed a complete-game shutout, scattering six hits and a walk while striking out 11 Eagles (7-6, 2-4).
Concordia struck first in the top of the first on Race Mellman's two-run blast. Jake Valadez added a two-run shot of his own in the top of the third to make it 4-0 Tornados.
Adam Ortega reached on an error and drove in a run on the play in fourth.
Bret Leiferman and Caleb Rodriguez hit an RBI double and single, respectively, to drive in two more Concordia tallies in the fifth. Ortega and Wilkes Swaim had the RBI knocks in the seventh.
GAME TWO – Tornados 9, Eagles 3
Concordia got on board first once again in the finale Saturday on an RBI single from Alex Britz in the top of the third.
Ozarks plated two in the bottom half of the frame, getting their first lead since Friday night after an RBI single and a Tornado error.
The 2-1 Eagles' advantage didn't last long as CTX bounced back for five runs in the top of the fourth. Britz and a two-run double that chased the UO starter from the contest. Mellman greeted the reliever with an RBI single. Colton Poindexter also had an RBI hit in the inning.
Poindexter added an insurance run all by himself with a solo homer in the seventh.
Mellman would smash an RBI triple in the top of the eighth to make it 8-2 CTX. He would score on an RBI single from Michael Evan.
Ozarks got a run back in the bottom of the eighth on a solo homer, but Justin Traxler escaped further damage.
Traxler worked six innings of relief. He scattered five hits and struck out eight.
Concordia returns to action Monday at 6 p.m. against Baldwin Wallace at Tornado Field.
