BOX SCORE 2 AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia Texas baseball team won a pair of one-run games in its doubleheader sweep of UT Dallas Saturday afternoon at Tornado Field, winning the series two games to one.
Bret Leiferman was officially 4-for-5 at the plate but he also drew four walks, including the one that brought in the game-winning run in the opener.
GAME ONE – CTX 3, UTD 2Concordia Texas walked off 4-3 winners in game one.
Bret Leiferman drew the bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh to give the Tornados the victory.
CTX opened the game with two big runs in the bottom of the first, taking advantage of a UTD miscue.
Jake Valadez and
Colton Poindexter drove in those runs.
The Comets answered in the top of the second on Haden Johnson's RBI single.
It stayed a 2-1 contest until the top of the seventh when UT Dallas tied it up on pinch-hitter Nolan Smith's RBI double.
Lane Hobbs earned his seventh win of the year in the complete-game outing.
GAME TWO – CTX 6, UTD 5The Tornados overcame a 5-2 hole to gain a 6-5 five lead thanks for a four-run sixth inning.
Garrett Benyo scored the go-ahead run scored on a wild pitch.
The Comets opened the game with five straight hits, scoring two runs, but CTX starter
Josh Smith settled down and got UTD to hit into a double play. Smith then got a clutch strikeout to avoid more trouble.
The visitors added two more runs in the second on Jimmy Norris RBI triple. Norris later scored on a groundout.
Concordia got one run back in the bottom of the third on Benyo's RBI fielder's choice. He ended the day 3-for-5. Benyo later scored the game-winning run on the aforementioned wild pitch.
Adam Ortega led off the big sixth inning with a single and came around to score on an RBI knock from
Caleb Maddox, making it 5-3.
Connor Bertsch tied the game on a two-run single in that sixth inning.
UTD scored one in the top of the fifth on a double and a CTX error to extend their lead to 5-2.
Jake Valadez earned the win in 4.1 innings of relief, striking out seven and allowing just two hits.
The Tornados head to Sul Ross State for a three-game set starting Friday, Apr. 8 at 7 p.m. The games can be heard on KMACSports.com.
