BOX SCORE ALPINE, Texas – The Concordia Texas baseball team found themselves in a 7-2 hole entering the fourth, but the Tornados went on to score the next 18 runs of the contest to win 20-9 at Sul Ross State Friday evening.
Race Mellman's two-run double in the top of the eighth put the Tornados (18-10, 10-3 ASC) up 9-7. It was the first time Concordia led since it scored the game's first run in the top of the first.
CTX went on to score 11 more, all in the ninth, as the squad sent 14 batters to the plate.
Both
Gareth Hutton and
Adam Ortega went 3-for-5. Hutton drove in a team-high four runs.
Caleb Rodriguez's RBI double in the sixth tied the game, but it was
Gareth Hutton's two-run single that capped a three-run fifth to bring Concordia within a run.
The Lobos (14-14, 7-6) used a four-run first to open up the contest, answering the Tornados' lone run in the top half of the frame. The hosts scattered three more in the second and third innings.
Sul Ross State added two runs in the bottom of the ninth on a home run.
It is just the fourth time CTX scored 20-or-more runs in a game in program history, and the first time the Tornados reached the mark in six years.
The two teams resume action tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
