BOX SCORE

GEORGETOWN, Texas -- Concordia freshman forward Omar Aguirre's goal right before halftime and a second half save proved to be the difference as the Tornados moved to 2-1 on the season with a 1-0 victory over Houston-Victoria on Tuesday afternoon.

In the 89th minute, clinging to a 1-0 lead, a Concordia foul in the box resulted in a penalty kick for Houston-Victoria, their last chance to tie it up. Jaguars' junior defender Reece Hannigan was chosen to take the shot, but junior goalkeeper Jesus Barrera was there for the save as he dove to his right, deflecting the ball and clinching the win for the Tornados.

In the first half, Concordia was aggressive offensively logging seven of its 12 total shots. In the second minute, the Tornados missed a chance for an early lead when sophomore forward Rolando Hernandez's kick hit the crossbar.

It was not until the 45th minute that Concordia was able to get on the board. After a yellow card on Houston-Victoria, the Tornados were set up well for a goal-scoring opportunity as junior midfielder Diego Outerial played the ball on the left side of the field and found Aguirre towards the middle of the box, Aguirre pump faked one defender and then shot left past Jaguars' senior goalkeeper Brian Redmond to go up 1-0.

The second half, the Tornados maintained their lead while thwarting multiple Jaguars offensive attacks, which included seven corner kicks in the period alone. Barrera was a key component of Concordia's defense as he had four saves on the day, but also corralled multiple corner kick crosses.

The Tornados will travel to Kerrville, Texas, to face Schreiner on Friday at 2 p.m. for the first of two road contests.
