BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – The Concordia Baseball team, behind strong pitching performances, won the final game of the series 8-2 over Birmingham Southern on Sunday afternoon.
Matthew Williams,
Kylen Harrell and
Ryan Capel combined to pitch nine innings of two-run ball.
Williams received the ball for his third start of the season. He went 4.1 innings giving up two runs on five hits, while striking out three.
The Tornados would give Williams early run support by scoring two runs in the first. With one out,
Luke Kress would get hit by the pitch to reach base,
Michael Evan would follow up with a single and
Jake Valadez would bring both home with a double to center.
The Panthers would tie it up in the fifth though after David Scott stole second and would come home on an RBI single by Rich Misischiaf, who would later score in the inning on a groundout after a stolen base and a wild pitch moved him to third. Harrell relieved Williams in the fifth and closed out the inning.
CTX would get back the two runs in the six on a sac fly by
Colton Poindexter and RBI hit by pitch by Kress. The second time Kress was hit by the pitch in the game.
Harrell would pitch into the ninth facing one over the minimum in four innings allowing only two hits, walking one, and striking out one. The Tornados would add a run each in the seventh and eighth and headed into the bottom half of the ninth leading 6-2.
Capel relieved Harrell with one out in the ninth and the bases loaded. Capel would strike out the next batter and forced a ground out to short to close out the game for his first save of the year.
CTX returns home for a round robin with Concordia Chicago and Southwestern at Tornado Field. The Tornados will face Concordia Chicago Friday night at 7 p.m.
