AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia Baseball team, behind
Matthew Brown's pitching performance, defeated tenth-ranked Concordia Chicago 8-2 on Friday night.
Brown, in his first start on the mound, pitched six innings, giving up one run on four hits. Brown struck out three batters on the night, notching his first win of the season.
The Tornados (4-6), in only their third home game of the season, scored eight runs on 11 hits, including a five-run third inning.
Caleb Maddox finished the game with three hits, scoring twice and driving in two.
Ryan Clouse and
Colton Poindexter each had two hits and two RBIs on the night.
The Cougars (0-1) struck first, scoring a run in the second on an RBI single by Brady Roberts. CTX responded in the bottom half of the inning as three straight singles brought home Maddox to tie it up at 1-1.
In the next inning, the Tornados would bat around and bring home five runs.
Luke Kress started the inning getting hit by the pitch, followed by a one-out walk to
Jake Valadez. Both would come home on Maddox's double down the left field line.
Casen Novak worked a walk and Clouse's single brought home the third run of the inning. Poindexter would cap off the inning with a two-run triple and CTX led 6-1 after three. The Tornados would add a run each in the fourth and six innings to make it 8-1.
The run support was more than enough for Brown, who only allowed a CUC player to reach base in two of his six innings pitched, and had help from his defense as they turned three double plays in the game and
Race Mellman had a diving catch out in center in the fourth.
Justin Traxler would come on in relief of Brown, closing out the final three innings, giving up only a run in the ninth as CTX won 8-2.
The Tornados returns to the field Saturday afternoon against Concordia Chicago with first pitch at 1 p.m.
