LONGVIEW, Texas – The Concordia Baseball team, behind a pair of strong pitching performances, completed the sweep of LeTourneau in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon for their sixth-straight win.
In game one, the Tornados turned to
Jake Valadez for the start. He pitched four innings, giving up only two runs, one earned, on one hit. Valadez also had two hits at the plate, scoring once and driving in a run.
CTX would take the lead in the second inning on an RBI double by
Cole Angelle after Valadez led off the inning with a single. The Tornados would add a run in the third and fourth innings on an RBI single by Valadez and an RBI double by
Colton Poindexter to make it 3-0.
The Yellow Jackets would score two runs in the fourth to make 3-2 and ended the day for Valadez.
Justin Traxler came on in relief in the fifth and finished the game, giving up only two hits while striking out two.
The Tornados loaded the bases in the sixth and
Casen Novak made it 4-2 by working a walk to bring home
James Carr, who pitch ran for
Nathan Train in the inning.
In the final inning, Traxler retired the side in order as CTX went on to win the first game 4-2.
In game two, the Tornados bats stayed hot, scoring 10 runs on 10 hits.
Wilkes Swaim and
Race Mellman each had two RBIs while
Cameron Rape and Poindexter each scored twice.
Matthew Williams took the mound for CTX, pitching six innings of two-hit ball, giving up no runs and striking out three.
The Tornados took a 1-0 lead in the second after Rape was hit by a pitch, stole second, and came home on Wilkes' single. CTX added another run in the fourth to make it 2-0.
The Tornados would break open the game in the fifth, batting around and scoring five runs to extend their lead to 7-0. Mellman had a two-run single, while Angelle had a pinch-hit RBI single.
Matthews, meanwhile, retired nine of 10 LETU hitters at one point allowing only one extra-base hit.
Dakota Brewton pitched a scoreless seventh.
CTX scored three runs in the eighth on a pair of sac flies by
Clarence Guidry and
Michael Evan and an RBI single by Novak to make it 10-0.
Kylen Harrell came on to pitch in the bottom half of the inning and worked around a single and error to end the inning and the game due to the run rule as the Tornados won 10-0.
CTX have now won 10 of their last 11 games and will return to Tornado Field on March 14 to host UT Dallas at 1 p.m.
