AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia Baseball team scored 24 runs in two games as they defeated Mary Hardin-Baylor in a doubleheader to win the series on Saturday afternoon.
In game one, the Tornados turned to
Jake Valadez on the mound as he went four plus innings, giving up two runs on three hits while striking out five.
Colton Pointdexter had a pair of hits, scoring twice and driving in one.
Michael Evan and
Caleb Rodriguez each had one but scored twice.
CTX took the lead in the first inning, scoring five runs on one hit as the Cru committed three straight errors leading to three unearned runs. In the next frame, the Tornados pushed across four runs, including a two-run single by Evan, to make it 9-0 after two.
The Cru would score five runs in the game, but it was not enough as the Tornados added two runs in the fifth and went on to win 11-5 to even the series at one apiece.
In game two,
Matthew Williams was on the bump for CTX. He earned his fourth win of the season, pitching a seven-inning complete game as the Tornados won on run rule 13-1.
Three Tornados had two plus hits, led by Evan's three hits, driving in one and scoring once. Valadez hit his second home run of the year in CTX's 10-run sixth inning.
Bret Leiferman had a triple, his third in his last three games.
CTX scored a run in each of the first three innings and led 3-1 heading to the fourth. Williams did not allow a runner till the third inning, giving up only three hits and one run on the day.
In the sixth, the Tornados sent 14 batters to the plate as they scored 10 runs on eight hits. Valadez led off the inning with a home run. One out later, seven straight hitters would reach, including
Casen Novak with a two-run double and RBI hits by Poindexter and Leiferman.
In the seventh, Williams retired the side in order to end the game as the CTX has now won nine of their last 10 games.
The Tornados will next up head to Jackson, Miss., to face Belhaven in a series beginning on Friday at 4 p.m.
