JACKSON, Miss. – The Concordia Baseball traveled on the road to face Belhaven in a doubleheader Friday night, losing both games by one run.
In game one, the Tornados grabbed the lead in the second inning, scoring two unearned runs.
Jake Valadez, who started for CTX, reached base on a Blazers' throwing error.
The Tornados would load the bases one out later as
Alex Britz walked while
Ryan Clouse singled.
Clarence Guidry III brought home the first run of the inning on a fielder's choice and
Casen Novak worked an RBI walk later in the inning to make it 2-0.
In the fifth, BU tied it up on back to back RBI singles which ended the day for Valadez, who gave up only three hits and two unearned runs, while striking out three.
The game remained scoreless for the next five innings. CTX would move a runner to third in the eighth but a fly out to center ended the threat. From the sixth inning on, the Tornados only allowed three hits, but the Blazers ended the game on a walk-off homer in the eleventh inning, winning 3-2.
In game two,
Matthew Brown received the ball for CTX, but was not able to get out of the second inning, as the Blazers batted around scoring five runs on six hits.
Trey Toney came in relief of Brown and combined with
Justin Baldwin and
Ryan Capel to close out the game pitching 4.1 scoreless innings, allowing only four hits and striking out three.
The Tornados would counter with three runs in the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 5-3. The first two batters would reach as
Jacob Gwynne started the inning with a walk while
Nathan Train singled to left. A wild pitch moved the runners up one base and Gwynne would come home on a
Caleb Maddox ground out.
Colton Poindexter followed up with a walk. Train and Poindexter would both come home on a wild pitch and a BU error to make it a two-run game.
CTX would scratch across another run in the sixth on an RBI single by
Bret Leiferman to cut it to 5-4. In their final at bat, the Tornados loaded the bases with two outs, but
Wilkes Swaim flied out to right-center to end the game, losing 5-4.
CTX will close out the series with a 10 a.m. start on Saturday, as the game was moved to an earlier time due to rain in the forecast.
