Tornados drop opening game against Mary Hardin-Baylor

AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia Baseball team held Mary Hardin Baylor to only three runs, but it was not enough, losing 3-1 on Friday night to snap their seven-game win streak.

Matthew Brown took the mound for the Tornados, pitching into the fifth inning, giving up only three runs on eight hits while striking out two.

The Cru took the early lead in the first inning on an RBI double and led 1-0 after one frame. CTX tied it up at 1-1 in the fourth inning on two hits.

Jake Valadez led off the inning with a double to left-center. Two outs later, Ryan Clouse hit a single to center to bring home Valadez and tie it up.

UMHB responded with a pair of runs in the fifth though to retake the lead 3-1. After getting the first out of the inning, Brown gave up a pair of hits and an error loaded the bases for the Cru. Mitch Patterson's single up the middle brought home two. Justin Traxler came on in relief of Brown to end the inning.

In the final five innings, the Tornados only had three batters reach base. In the eighth, Bret Lieferman hit a one-out triple to right-center, but the next batters would strike out swinging to end the inning.

In the ninth, CTX had one final chance to rally after Luke Kress worked a one-out walk. But the Tornados could not take advantage as a ground out and strike out ended the game and CTX fell 3-1.

The Tornados will play the final two games of the series against Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
